If you have insurance, we will work with you to help you receive your wig at little to no cost at all. We know you are likely facing a myriad of expenses due to your illness, which is why your new hair is free or only a fraction of the normal cost. This organization creates and donates wigs to kids, age 21 and under, who are financially disadvantaged and suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any type of diagnosis. Many Locks of Love hair donation recipients struggle with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder that causes baldness and hair loss. NWFCS cuts through all the red tape for you by working directly with your insurance provider to help you receive a free or greatly discounted, high quality human hair wig.

NWFCS ensures each wig you receive is a one-of-a-kind piece created just for you. Creating a wig with human hair takes about 20 donated ponytails. Multiple ponytails are sewn together and tied into a cap that's specially measured to fit on a person’s head. The hair can then be colored, cut, permed, and otherwise styled. Even if you currently have a hot pink pixie cut or can't grow your hair long enough to donate it, you can still contribute in a hugely impactful way.

Once you receive your wig, any person who is a licensed professional at a salon will be able to help you style it. Synthetic wigs are made from man-made plastic fibers and typically come pre-styled. With synthetic wigs, changing up your look can be difficult because the fibers are not normally heat-resistant, meaning they can melt when styling tools are applied to them. While synthetic wigs are a great, budget-friendly option, they usually have a shinier appearance and can fit awkwardly. They also look less natural than wigs made from human hair and don’t last as long. From wig selection to connecting you with a hairstylist, our supportive team guides you through the process of customizing your new hair, so it looks and feels natural to you.
They do accept gray hair, which is sold to help defray their costs, as well as hair that's been permed and hair that is colored (but not bleached). When you think of chopping off hair, you typically picture one large ponytail, but it's actually preferred to divide it out into a few ponies instead. Some organizations even ask you to section the hair by layers if the length varies, so again, just double-check before you start cutting. Wrap an elastic (or a few) around each section until it's tightly secured. Some places prefer ponytails over braids, so again, make sure before you get started.
